Zen(IPA(key) /zɛn/) is Natani's older brother. Due to a Dark Spell on Natani's and Zen's first mission, Natani's soul was broken, but thanks to his brother, Zen used his own soul to hold Natani's together. As a result they are both permanently linked to one another's emotions, thoughts, and senses. At first this was believed by some to be the reason for Natani's gender (due to the way Zen saw him as his 'helpless baby sister'), but it turns out all the link took away was his memories of wanting to be a guy all along. On a mission to kill Trace and Flora, Zen was stabbed by Keith through the chest with a sword, but he later healed after nearly dying. He is currently alive and healthy, but teases Natani now and again, making him rant to himself. Recently, Zen has been assigned by his clan to assassinate Karen, Maren, Raine, Red, and to bring in Sythe for questioning (If not feasible, to assassinate him as well). During this time, Zen was captured by the group and then shackled with Raine's Magic Inhibiting Slave Bracelet, forcibly severing the connection to Natani, resulting in him collapsing into unconsciousness. In Natani's mindscape, "Young Natani" reveals that because Zen is protective of Natani, the only family he has left, part of him will always see Natani as, again, his "helpless baby sister", which is why Natani was always afraid it was Zen who had made him the way he was.[3] In reality, it was from 'his soul' all along.
